HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley Launched by Cooke’s 3-Run Blast in 1st Inning

Charles Cooke had two hits and drove in four runs to lead host Antelope Valley High to a 5-4 victory over Palmdale in a Golden League baseball game Friday.

Cooke, a sophomore first baseman, hit a two-out, three-run home run in the first inning to give Antelope Valley a 3-0 lead and his one-out single in the third gave the Antelopes (3-3, 3-0 in league play) a 5-3 advantage.

Jeremy Holiday (2-0), a left-handed freshman, picked up the victory in relief of Jason Storm. Holiday gave up one unearned run and four hits, striking out four in four innings.

Newbury Park 5, Camarillo 1--Ray Clinton threw a two-hitter for host Newbury Park and the Panthers took advantage of some wild Camarillo pitching to post their fourth consecutive victory in the Marmonte League game.

Newbury Park (6-3, 2-0) was also held to two hits, but converted a hit, three walks, a wild pitch and two sacrifice flies into a four-run third.

Westlake 4, Agoura 2--Todd Singleton pitched a three-hitter, struck out eight and walked one for visiting Westlake in the Marmonte League game.

Trailing, 2-1, after four innings, the Warriors (4-3, 1-1) scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.

Thousand Oaks 6, Channel Islands 2--Junior right-hander Tim Baron (3-0) extended his scoreless-inning streak to 21 with a three-hit shutout in the Marmonte League game.

Baron pitched only to three batters over the minimum while striking out five and walking one. He allowed one hit in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Quartz Hill 5, Littlerock 2--Kyle Goss went two for four with three RBIs, including a first-inning solo home run--his third--to lead the host Rebels (6-2, 2-1) in a Golden League game.

Senior right-hander Roger Worley (3-1) went six innings, allowing two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.

Saugus 3, Burroughs 0--Junior right-hander Brandon Hernandez fired a one-hitter, struck out six, walked none and did not allow a runner past first base in winning his first Foothill League game. Darren Hoevel had two run-scoring singles and Jeff Brown added an RBI single for Saugus (6-3, 1-0). Josh Cartee’s single was the only hit for Burroughs (1-1 in league play).

Hueneme 6, San Marcos 1--Junior right-hander Josh Towers (1-2) struck out eight and walked five while scattering four hits to earn his first victory for host Hueneme (4-4, 2-1) in a Channel League game.

Art Bolen went two for three and drove in a run for the Vikings, and Manuel Aranda also drove in a run in a two-for-four performance.

Rio Mesa 11, Ventura 2--Steve Arneson led a 12-hit attack with his second consecutive four-hit game, going four for five with a double and three RBIs to lead visiting Rio Mesa (5-4, 2-1) to a Channel League victory over Ventura (2-6-1, 2-1). Rudy Swanger and Johnny Espinoza each had two hits each for Rio Mesa.

SOFTBALL

Crescenta Valley 3, Burroughs 0--Junior Kim Scott and sophomore Danielle Ferreira combined on a no-hitter for Crescenta Valley (7-0) in a nonleague game. Scott, a transfer from Burroughs, improved her record to 3-0. Senior center fielder Stephanie Kanzle had both Crescenta Valley hits, including an RBI single, and scored a run. Left fielder Jessica Hayes saved the no-hitter with a running catch in the sixth.

Montclair Prep 19, Rio Hondo 4--Montclair Prep had 16 hits and three players each had three hits as the Mounties won a nonleague game at Rio Hondo. Stephanie Aron (three RBIs), Missi Bernstein and Kori Okun each had three hits for Montclair Prep (6-2).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Camarillo 15-3, 15-0, 15-11--With its Marmonte League winning streak stopped at 66 matches, Royal was eager to re-establish its pride and did so in convincing fashion by routing visiting Camarillo in a league match. Josh White had 37 assists, Dan Rizzo had nine kills and Eric Carlsen added eight kills and four stuff blocks. The Highlanders had not lost a league match in six years until Thousand Oaks defeated them on Tuesday.
