PREP ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Blasts Top-Ranked Marina

Fountain Valley took advantage of a five-run third inning to upset top-ranked Marina, 7-1, in Sunset League softball Wednesday at Fountain Valley High.

Lindsey Collins led the rally with a three-run home run for the Barons, her second of the season. Collins finished the day with two hits and four runs batted in.

Deborah Harrelson held Marina (10-2, 1-1) to three hits, and improved to 5-3 as Fountain Valley (6-5-1, 2-0) remained undefeated in league.

Molly Sinclair added three hits, scoring two runs and driving in another for the Barons.

In another Sunset League game:

Ocean View 15, Edison 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Kathy Ponce hit a two-run home run in the first inning and combined with Sarah Gulla for a no-hitter. Tracy Wilkinson added a three-run home run in the fourth and Janee Sansone collected three hits, scored four runs and had three steals for Ocean View (8-3, 1-1).

In nonleague softball:

Capistrano Valley 2, Laguna Hills 1 (9 innings)--Jackie Anderson’s bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth drove in the winning run for Capistrano Valley (7-4). Anderson also doubled in the first inning to drive in the Cougars’ other run. Laguna Hills (0-4) lost a run in the second inning when an extra-base hit drove in one run, but a second runner that scored on the play was called out for missing a base.

Magnolia 3, Mission Viejo 1--Cynthia Garcia hit a two-run double in the fifth inning for Magnolia (6-5). Tiffany Mercado (4-4) pitched a complete game, allowing three hits.

In Garden Grove League golf:

La Quinta 221, Rancho Alamitos 240--Alex Yi shot an even round of 35, as La Quinta won its first match of the season.

In Sea View League golf:

Tustin 209, Woodbridge 213--Jimmy Lee shot a one-over 37 as the Tillers (3-8, 2-5) upset Woodbridge (10-2, 5-2).

In nonleague golf:

Mission Viejo 213, Laguna Hills 236, Foothill 242--Jeff Cook was the medalist for Mission Viejo (5-4) with a two-over-par 38. Teammate Pat McCoy shot 40. Laguna Hills (2-4) finished second, followed by Foothill (2-5) at Mission Viejo Country Club.

In Sea View League boys’ swimming:

Irvine 114, Tustin 55--Jason Lezak won the 200 medley (2:04.50) and the 500 freestyle (4:52.68) for the Vaqueros (3-2-1, 3-0-1).

In Sunset League boys’ swimming:

Fountain Valley 101, Huntington Beach 65--Rick Newton won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.94) and Brent Wagner won the 100 backstroke (1:03.20) to lead Fountain Valley (4-2, 3-1). Anthony Iacopetti won the 50 freestyle (23.42) and 100 freestyle (52.74) and Frank Tsai won the 200 individual medley (2:09.10) and 100 butterfly (55.87) for Huntington Beach (1-3 in league).

In Sea View League girls’ swimming:

Irvine 125, Tustin 42--Freshman Lana Kraus took first in the 50 free (26.62) for visiting Irvine (4-2, 4-0).

In Sunset League girls’ swimming:

Fountain Valley 113, Huntington Beach 57--Jill Shumaker won the 50 freestyle (26.60), Lindsey Ortega won the 500 freestyle (5:41.50) and Chani Siegal won the 100 butterfly (1:10.24) to lead Fountain Valley (5-1, 4-0).

In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:

Bolsa Grande 13 1/3, Pacifica 7 2/3--Long Nguyen and Quan Nguyen swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, to lead Bolsa Grande (1-8, 1-4).

In Sunset League boys’ tennis:

Servite 17 1/3, Westminster 3 2/3--The doubles team of Alex Piana and Mike Luciano improved their record to 18-3 by sweeping their sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

In Olympic League boys’ track and field:

Orange Lutheran 79, Brethren Christian 57--Frank Rodriguez won the shotput (36-8) and the discus (103-6) to help Orange Lutheran (2-2, 2-0) remain undefeated in the Olympic League. Also for the Lancers, Randy Piehl won the 400 meters (54.9) and ran the the anchor leg on the winning 400 relay team.

In Olympic League girls’ track and field:

Orange Lutheran 73, Brethren Christian 54--Meg Ferrell finished first in both distance races for Orange Lutheran, winning the 1,600 in 6:07.8 and the 3,200 in 13:43.3. Teammate Mandy Dowding won the triple jump (31-1) and the 400 meter (1:10.3). Orange Lutheran is 2-0 in league.

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Fountain Valley 3, Marina 1--Phil Domingo had 26 kills and Ed Ratledge added 13 kills and 12 blocks as the Barons (7-0, 5-0) won, 15-11, 12-15, 15-9, 15-11.

Huntington Beach 3, Servite 0--Kevin Wray had seven kills as Huntington Beach (6-1, 5-0) won, 15-0, 15-1, 15-6. Servite fell to 1-4 in league.
