A truck crashed into a fast-food restaurant on Friday, dumping a shower of glass on customers and seriously injuring a pregnant woman, police said.

The driver, Harry Tien, 39, of Alhambra, told police his truck’s throttle became stuck as he tried to turn at the intersection of Puente and Central avenues at 5:30 p.m.

His truck went over the curb, up a small embankment and then slammed into John’s Place at 1201 W. Central Ave., police said.

A pregnant woman, identified only as Shelly Duncan, was eating at the restaurant and was struck in the head by a tire, according to Nancy Rohmberg , spokeswoman at UCI Medical Center.

Duncan was airlifted to the medical center and is listed in guarded but stable condition in the labor and delivery ward. Rohmberg said she will remain overnight for observation.

Five other customers received minor cuts from glass and were treated by paramedics at the scene, police said.

Larry Nativo, a frequent customer of the restaurant, said he had just come in through a back door when he heard a loud bang.

“I come up front and looked and there’s a car sitting on top of the booth,” Nativo said. He said he and others immediately evacuated people from the building.

“People were really surprised but stayed pretty calm. Everyone left calmly and orderly,” he said.

Nativo said the driver seemed “shook up” and mentioned a “mechanical failure” with his car.

“It’s real lucky this didn’t happen an hour later,” Nativo said. “This place would have been a lot more crowded, and more people would’ve been hurt.”

Police did not arrest the driver.
