Average Baseball Salary Rises to $1,188,679 : Money: Yankees are top-paid club at $1,760,974. Dodgers are at $1,457,552, Angels at $750,268.

The average baseball salary rose 6.1% this year, to $1,188,679 on opening day, according to a survey by The Associated Press.

The New York Yankees are the top-paid team for the first time since 1988.

New York Met third baseman Bobby Bonilla is the highest-paid player at $6.3 million, according to an examination of the contract terms for 746 players on opening day rosters and disabled lists.

Chicago Cub second baseman Ryne Sandberg, the salary leader last season, was second at $6,299,966.

The Yankees’ average was $1,760,974, up slightly from their $1,759,429 average on Aug. 31, 1993, the last day before rosters expanded. Toronto, first last year at $1,765,582, dropped to fifth this opening day at $1,498,667.

The Detroit Tigers, with a major league-leading 15 million-dollar players, rose to second at $1,594,700 from 10th at $1,265,317. Atlanta remained third but dropped to $1,500,080 from $1,676,211.

The Dodgers’ average salary declined from $1,457,552 on opening day last season to $1,426,346 this year, ninth in baseball. It was led by Tom Candiotti’s $3,650,000, with Brett Butler, Tim Wallach, Orel Hershiser and Darryl Strawberry earning more than $3 million. There were 12 Dodger millionaires.

The Angels’ average increased from $718,686 last year to $750,268 in 1994, but it is still ahead of only the San Diego Padres. Chuck Finley is the highest-paid Angel at $3,875,000. There were six Angel millionaires.

While the number of million-dollar players on opening day rose only slightly, to 265 from 262, the total of $2 million players rose to 192 from 182 and $3 million players increased to 119 from 99. There are 43 $4 million players, an increase of six, and 14 $5 million players, an increase of two.

The 6.1% rise from last year’s opening day average of $1,120,254 was less than the 8.9% increase in average ticket prices, to $10.45 from $9.60, the Chicago-based Team Marketing Report said.

Yankee Stadium in New York has the highest average ticket price at $14.44, up from $13.48 last season.

Mile High Stadium in Denver has the lowest average at $7.90.

The cost for a family of four to attend a game--including two beers, four hot dogs, four soft drinks, two caps, two programs and parking--rose 5.5%, to $95.80 from $90.84. The Yankees had the highest cost at $115.25.

Cincinnati was the low at $79.31.

The Angels hiked their average ticket price from $8.02 to $8.06, with a family average going from $84.60 to $90.24.

The Dodgers’ average ticket price rose from $9.15 to $9.68, with a family average going from $88.60 to $90.73.
