LOS ANGELES : Striping Work to Close Freeway Car-Pool Lanes

The car-pool lanes on the quake-damaged Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10) were scheduled to be closed at midnight Friday so crews can add new traffic striping to the highway for its reopening early next week, a Caltrans spokesman said.

The freeway, severed at Fairfax Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard in the Jan. 17 earthquake, is scheduled to reopen before the rush hour Tuesday, Caltrans spokesman Russell Snyder said. Eastbound motorists will have to exit at Robertson Boulevard and take surface streets to the La Cienega Boulevard on-ramp. Westbound cars must get off the freeway at La Brea Avenue for a detour to Washington Boulevard.

The eastbound La Cienega Boulevard on- and off-ramps will remain closed for reconstruction, but all other ramps will be open.

Although the car-pool lane experiment was successful, Snyder said, the rebuilt freeway will not have car-pool lanes.
