Orr Tells Iowa State He’s Retiring at 66

Johnny Orr, basketball coach at Iowa State for 14 years, announced Thursday that he will not return for a 15th season.

Fighting back tears, Orr, 66, said at Ames, Iowa, that he will remain at Iowa State as associate athletic director to fulfill the last year of his contract.

He was 218-200 at Iowa State--14-13 last season--and 209-113 in 12 seasons at Michigan before that. A 39-33 record in three seasons at Massachusetts gives him an overall coaching record of 466-346.

Wayne Wright, Pepperdine athletic director, said he has received more than 40 inquiries from prospective coaches seeking information about the head basketball coaching position that opened when former Wave coach Tom Asbury was hired at Kansas Stater. . . . Jay Wright, a longtime assistant for Rollie Massimino, first at Villanova and later at Nevada Las Vegas, was hired as head coach at Hofstra. . . . Forward Ed O’Bannon received the Coach John Wooden Award as UCLA’s most valuable player.

Football

Orlando, Fla., is the latest possible destination of the Raiders, who haven’t publicly said they are going anywhere despite uncertainty over the availability of the earthquake-damaged Coliseum.

But owner Al Davis, in Orlando for the league meetings last month, met for two hours with Mayor Glenda Hood, then toured the 72,000-seat Florida Citrus Bowl, according to Orlando officials. Since then, there apparently have been talks with Raider official Amy Trask.

“First it was Baltimore, then it was Oakland, then it was three or four other cities,” Trask said. “I’m not going to respond to every one of them.”

Linda Chapin, an Orlando official, told the Orlando Sentinel conversations have been going on.

Notre Dame player Tracy Graham said a female student, unhappy over their relationship, wrongly implicated him in the theft of a television and video cassette recorder. Graham said he argued with the girl last Thursday, and she then told campus police she had seen the stolen items in an off-campus apartment where Graham and teammate Michael Miller have admitted spending a lot of time.

Fred Joseph, the agent for Haywood Jeffires, said that the Rams have made a contract proposal believed to be worth $1.5 million a year, $500,000 less than Jeffires has been seeking.

Soccer

A request for asylum by 16 members of Haiti’s national soccer team was denied by the U.S. embassy in Port-au-Spain, Trinidad.

After three players filled out applications, embassy officials told the group the requests would not be granted because the law allows only Trinidad residents to apply for asylum in Port-au-Spain, said Ernst Jean-Baptiste, the sports director for the Haitian television network in Miami and a spokesman for the group.

A federal court in Argentina ruled that Diego Maradona has complied with ordered treatment for cocaine abuse, closing the 1991 drug case against the Argentine soccer star.

Tennis

Second-seeded Jim Courier defeated Jonas Svensson, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Nice Open in France. Courier will play seventh-seeded Wayne Ferriera, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over David Rikl. . . . Top-seeded Michael Chang defeated Omar Camporese, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Salem Open in Hong Kong, where he will play Michael Tebbutt, a 6-2, 7-5 victor over Amos Mansdorf. Martin Damm upset fifth-seeded Aaron Krickstein, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3, and third-seeded Brad Gilbert defeated Chuck Adams, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, in other matches.

Wayne Black, Jon Leach, Lukas Hovorka and Bren Hansen, declared ineligible at USC because of a violation of the NCAA’s expenses rule, have had their eligibility restored after missing two matches.

Petra Schmitt and Suzie Italiano of the USC women’s team, also were declared ineligible for the same reason and will miss today’s match against Stanford. Schmitt’s eligibility will be restored for Saturday’s match against California. Italiano’s status is pending.

Hockey

Forward Mike Hough of the Florida Panthers was suspended indefinitely by the NHL, pending a hearing, because of a slashing penalty in a game against Quebec earlier this week. . . . The United States, behind Cammi Granato’s goal with 6:35 left, rallied past Finland, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals of the women’s world hockey championships at Lake Placid, N.Y. The team will play China.

Miscellany

The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education has accused Fresno State of failing to provide women with athletic opportunities comparable to those offered men. The university was cited for 11 violations, mostly dealing with lack of adequate facilities and sports form women.

Leonard Tose, former Philadelphia Eagle owner, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on behalf of his trucking company in order to save its lone asset, his $1.65 million house. . . . A cousin of Jerrod Mustaf, Phoenix Sun forward, was indicted by Phoenix prosecutors in the July 22 slaying of a woman who told her family she was carrying the player’s unborn child.
