DOUBLE TROUBLE: If you follow the local alumni in major league baseball, it wasn’t a bad week: Jeff Kent of the New York Mets was selected National League player of the week Monday and Bob Hamelin of the Kansas City Royals was picked as the American League’s player. . . . Kent, a former Edison High standout, hit six homers and drove in 13 runs. Hamelin, a former Irvine High and Rancho Santiago College star, homered in four of five games he played last week and also got 13 RBIs.

HUMPTY-DUMPTY: You can say goodby soon to the abandoned terminal at John Wayne Airport. The county is making plans to tear it down. . . . Officials wanted to convert it for office use, says spokeswoman Courtney Weircioch. But they discovered it would be cheaper--mainly because of serious asbestos problems--just to start from scratch. The supervisors take the first steps toward demolition contracts at today’s board meeting. The building was dedicated in 1967, when few knew how quickly the county would outgrow it.

SOFTWARE CELEB: Billionaire Bill Gates, whose Microsoft Corp. is the biggest name in software for personal computers, makes a couple of stops in Orange County today. . . . He’s the morning keynote speaker at the Electronics Messaging Assn. conference in Anaheim, where he’ll announce a new line. Afterward, Gates will tour Ingram Micro Inc. in Santa Ana, a major distributor for his software. Says an Ingram spokeswoman: “We’re excited about him taking a good look at what we’re doing with his product.”

DOCTOR’S ADVICE: When doctors need a doctor, who’s first on their list? A new book, “The Best Doctors in America,” lists 7,200 of them, based on a national survey of doctors asked: “If a loved one came to you with a medical problem in your field . . . to whom would you send them?” . . . . You’ll find 37 Orange County doctors on the list, including 20 at the UC Irvine Medical Center. The book costs a bit more than an office visit--$95.
