If you already miss high school basketball, you can still see some of the top underclassmen in the Southland compete every weekend through late May in the Slam N’ Jam Development League.

The league plays its games at Compton Community College and Dominguez High every Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. Some of the participating area players include James Brown from Long Beach Poly, Brian Johnson from St. John Bosco and Chris Funderburk and Jonathon Nelson from Lynwood.

The games draw large crowds, including some familiar faces.

“You get roughly over 200 different scouts or coaches every weekend,” said Kenneth Miller, the league’s director of publicity, who listed Lorenzo Romar, George Raveling, Rollie Massimino and Seth Greenberg as recent coaches to attend.

Miller said that more than 500 players have received scholarships in the league’s 15-year history.

In addition to offering basketball, the league helps prepare players for the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

“We have a tutorial program that is called ‘Athletes for Academic Success,’ ” Miller said. “It provides free tutors to help kids in the league who are studying for the college entrance exam.”

LONG BEACH STATE

It looked so promising after the eighth-ranked Long Beach State baseball team won two of three games from then-No. 1 Cal State Fullerton on April 8-10 at Blair Field. But since then, the 49ers’ Big West Conference title hopes drastically diminished after they lost three of four games, including two of three last weekend at San Jose State.

With Cal State Fullerton’s three-game sweep of Nevada Las Vegas last weekend, the 49ers (27-11, 7-5 in the Big West) moved two games behind the Titans (31-8, 9-3). Tuesday night’s 5-1 nonconference victory against Pepperdine began an eight-game home stand, including a three-game Big West series against UC Santa Barbara Friday and Saturday nights at 7:05 and Sunday at 1:05.

In the 49ers’ 3-1 loss Friday to San Jose State, Spartan right-handed pitcher Dave Sick (7-0) scattered four hits and struck out eight. The 49ers broke loose Saturday for 17 hits in a 12-4 victory. Sophomore right-hander Scott Rivette (8-1) gave up six hits and three earned runs in eight innings. In Sunday’s game, the 49ers lost, 3-2, in 10 innings.
