Southwest Conference athletic directors have scheduled an April 29 meeting in Dallas to “discuss how we’re going to close down the conference,” Texas A&M; athletic director Wally Groff said. It appears Rice, Texas Christian and Southern Methodist are heading to the Western Athletic Conference. Their move comes after Texas, Texas A&M;, Baylor and Texas Tech left the SWC for the Big Eight. The latest moves will leave Houston as the lone SWC school.

Prize money for the U.S. Open tennis championships will be increased to a record $9,360,100 for this year’s tournament, which begins Aug. 29. The singles title for both men and women will be worth $550,000, an increase of $15,000 from last year. Doubles winners will earn $200,000 per team with mixed doubles first prize set at $46,500.

Names In The News

Karl Benson was named as replacement for Joe Kearney as commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference. Benson, the Mid-American Conference Commissioner, will take over June 30 for Kearney, who is scheduled to retire after 14 years.
