GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP : Tran, Laske Lead Los Amigos to Victory Against La Quinta

Kiet Tran and Brian Laske combined for 46 of Los Amigos’ 56 kills as the Lobos beat La Quinta, 7-15, 15-6, 15-5, 7-15, 15-9, in a Garden Grove League match Friday at Los Amigos.

Tran, who pounded down a match-high 25 kills, led the first game with six, but the Lobos committed eight errors while scoring only seven points. The game ended with a Los Amigos pass and set, but no one stepped forward to hit the ball, which rose 10 feet into the air and dropped quietly into a campfire defense.

But Los Amigos (12-2, 7-1) came back in the second game, as Tran contributed five kills and a solo block. Laske led the attack in the third game, with eight kills. The senior had 21 total kills.

But La Quinta (8-5, 7-2) was not through. Leading 7-5 in the fourth game, the Aztecs went on a five-point run, then after two Lobos points, Tran hit long and then wide to make it 14-7. Lobo Coach Dave Avalos called a timeout, but he had no more left so the Aztecs were awarded the point and the game.

Los Amigos took a 6-0 lead behind Tony Troung’s serve in the fifth game, then scored two more points to make it 8-0, and the difference was too much for La Quinta, which made 14 errors in the game.

Down 14-6, match point, Dave Rosenthal came to the serving line. All night, good things had happened to the Aztecs behind Rosenthal’s serve.

They had gone on runs of five, four, three and two points--they always scored at least once when Rosenthal was at the line. But the Aztecs mustered only two more points before Ken King’s shot didn’t go over, giving the Lobos the side out, and Kevin Doane’s spike yawned into the net.
