COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC Wins Conference Softball Title

Southern California College’s softball team clinched the Golden State Athletic Conference championship with two victories Saturday at Cal Baptist.

In the first game, SCC rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to win, 4-1. The victory was keyed by Jen Caruso’s RBI single and Amy Lewis’ sacrifice fly. Beth Howard pitched a one-hitter in the second game, striking out six, as SCC posted its 41st victory, a school record.

SCC will play host to the NAIA District 3 tournament May 5-6.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 5-8, Pacific 4-4--In the second game, Shannon Dolan had two hits and scored two runs and Trinity Johnson (8-10) allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to lead Cal State Fullerton to the sweep.

Jennifer Mortensen (14-14) struck out five and gave up four runs on four hits, Jstone Vines had three hits and three runs scored and Beth Queypo and Traci Fischer each had two hits for the Titans (22-25, 10-10) in the first game. Pacific is 26-10, 10-8.

In UC Irvine Invitational track and field:

Frisone wins--Cal State Fullerton’s Steve Frisone and UC Irvine’s Laura Monson ran well in their 1,500-meter runs in the meet at UC Irvine.

Frisone won his race in 3:51.94, almost a second ahead of runner-up Jim Robbins of the Cal Coast Track Club. Monson, a freshman, was third behind Long Beach State’s Stacy Pando (4:36.03) but ran a lifetime best 4:39.95.

Other Irvine winners included the men’s 400 relay (43.35) and women’s 1,600 relay (3:59.19).

Long Beach State’s Le’Gretta Hinds won the 100 (14.27) and 400 hurdles (59.73), and former Edison High star Shelley Taylor, running unattached, won the women’s 3,000 in 9:56.56.

In the semifinals of the Big West Conference men’s tennis championships:

UC Irvine 4, San Jose State 1--Irvine’s Mark Tardif beat Derek Del Rosario, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, and teamed with Brandon Coupe to win, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles. The Anteaters advanced to play top-seeded Nevada Las Vegas in today’s finals.

In the Big West Conference women’s tennis championships:

UC Irvine seventh, CS Fullerton ninth--Janet Johnson defeated Farrah Tierney, 6-2, 6-1, in singles and teamed with Antji Fritschi to win a doubles match, 6-2, 6-0, helping UC Irvine to a 5-2 victory in the seventh-place match of the Big West women’s tennis championships at Ojai.

Kara Kolb won her singles set, 6-1, 6-1, to lead Fullerton to a 5-1 victory over San Jose State in the ninth-place match.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

California Baptist 3, Southern California College 1--David Seeley had a hit and a run scored and Rick Homutoff (2-3) struck out three and gave up three runs in five innings for host Southern California College (16-24, 6-9).

In Big West Conference baseball:

Titans rained out--Cal State Fullerton’s baseball game against Pacific in Stockton was rained out and will not be made up unless it has implications on the Big West Conference championship at the end of the season. The Titans will play Pacific in the final game of their scheduled three-game series at 1 p.m. today.
