50 Workers to Help Reassess Properties
Inundated by damage claims from the Northridge earthquake, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to hire 50 temporary employees to help reassess the value of thousands of affected properties.
About 38,000 residents and business owners so far have asked the county to lower their property taxes because their properties sustained at least $5,000 damage in the Jan. 17 temblor, said Gary Gillam, a spokesman for the Office of the Assessor. Property owners have until July 17 to file disaster reassessment claims.
The temporary employees will process claims for the next eight months, Gillam said. The county expects to be reimbursed for the $2.1-million cost by the federal government, he said. The state will reimburse the county for the difference between the pre- and post-disaster assessments, he said.
