ROUNDUP : DiDomizio Defeats, Dominates Oxnard on Two-Hitter

Don DiDomizio pitched a two-hitter, struck out eight batters and walked four as Rio Mesa High defeated Oxnard, 5-2, in a Channel League baseball game Tuesday.

Steve Arneson, Chad Snyder and John Espinoza each had two hits for the Spartans (14-5, 7-2 in league play).

Oak Park 6, Bishop Diego 4--Brent Schneider’s two-out single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning scored two runs to break the game open for Oak Park (9-4-1, 4-3) in a Tri-Valley League victory.

St. Bonaventure 6, Carpinteria 3--St. Bonaventure (10-7, 5-3) scored four runs on six consecutive singles with two out in the second inning of the Tri-Valley League game. Brad Burnett (5-1) struck out nine and walked five, giving up three runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory.

Buena 7, Dos Pueblos 5--Senior Jason Kimball’s third-inning grand slam got host Buena (11-7, 6-3) back in contention to knock Dos Pueblos out of first place in Channel League play. Buena now is tied for second with Dos Pueblos, one game behind Rio Mesa.

Ventura 6, San Marcos 5--Sophomore Buba Morales singled in Chad Anderson with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Ventura (8-8-1, 6-3) a come-from-behind victory in the Channel League game.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Oxnard 3, Cuesta 2--Jason Young broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out double in the top of the 10th to drive in Ray Franco and Joe Torres with the go-ahead runs in the Western State Conference game at Cuesta.

Pitcher Craig Arnold (4-4) went the distance to earn the victory for Oxnard (15-19, 9-10).

Ventura 15, Cal Lutheran JV 7--Jamal Nichols was three for five with three RBIs, two runs and three stolen bases for Ventura in the nonconference game.

Robert Fick added two hits, three runs scored and two stolen bases for the Pirates (20-13), who were seven for seven in stolen base attempts.

SOFTBALL

Saugus 8, Burroughs 0--Jeannine Giordano was three for three with four RBIs to lead the Centurions (19-2, 6-0) in a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Giordano had a two-run double in the first and a two-run double in the fifth. Kim O’Leary was two for four with two runs scored.

Jamie Gillies (16-2) yielded one hit in five innings.

Royal 3, Thousand Oaks 2--Jessie Davenport’s wild pitch in the 10th inning allowed Susan Torst to score the game-winner from third base for Royal (10-7, 4-4) in a Marmonte League thriller.

Chara Smith tripled in a run and scored on an error in the ninth inning for Thousand Oaks (13-6, 5-4), but the Highlanders came back to tie the score at 2-2 on two walks, a single, and two errors.

Smith was three for four, and Torst was two for five on the day.

Oak Park 1, Bishop Diego 0--Tami Beck singled in Shana Silverman from second with one out in the top of the ninth for the Eagles (11-5, 4-1) in the Tri-Valley League game.

Kaylene Boldroff pitched a two-hitter, striking out 12 for Oak Park (11-5, 4-1).

La Reina 7, St. Bonaventure 1--Shane Anderson hit her fourth home run in six games in the Tri-Valley League game at Thousand Oaks.

Anderson drove in four runs, three coming on a three-run home run in the third which gave the Regents (10-7, 5-0) a 5-0 lead.

Santa Clara 9, Nordhoff 1--Necie Madrigal scored twice and stole three bases for the Saints (7-6, 3-3) in a Frontier League game.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Thousand Oaks 82, Channel Islands 49, Newbury Park 25--Kim Mortensen won three events and Michelle Stevenson took two as Thousand Oaks clinched its first Marmonte League dual meet title in three years at Channel Islands.

Dawn Harper (100 and 200 meters), Shawanda Hotchkiss (long and triple jump) and Dolores Tuimoloau (shotput, discus) each won two events for the Raiders (5-2, 5-2), who lacked the depth to stay with Thousand Oaks (7-0, 7-0).
