COLLEGE ROUNDUP : West Keeps Pierce in WSC Lead

Adam West notched his ninth consecutive victory as Pierce College defeated Santa Monica, 4-3, to clinch a tie for the Western State Conference’s South Division baseball title Tuesday at Santa Monica.

The Brahmas (25-14, 17-7 in WSC play) lead the division by one game with one to play.

West, a left-hander, improved to 10-4 and reliever Chris Frith-Smith picked up his fifth save.

Pierce scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Robert Vazquez drove in two runs and Cesar Martinez broke a conference record with his 30th stolen base. He has 38 steals overall.

Bakersfield 7, Glendale 6--Three singles, three doubles and a sacrifice fly led to five Bakersfield runs in the sixth inning as the Renegades (24-16) remained one game behind Pierce. Brian Warner hit his eighth home run for Glendale.

Canyons 20, Valley 9--Canyons had seven players with at least two hits, including Tom Nickels, who was five for six with three doubles, three runs and four RBIs in the WSC game. Chris Pfatenhauer had four hits and Johnny Davis added three, including a three-run home run.

Will Skett was two for four with two runs and an RBI for Valley.

San Bernardino 16, Antelope Valley 10--Ryan Branch hit a three-run home run and Will Wallace hit a two-run shot for Antelope Valley (14-18, 8-15) in a Foothill Conference game.
