Gore Up to Par, Repeats as Pac-10 Golf Champion

Arizona sophomore Jason Gore, a former standout at Hart High, won his second consecutive Pacific 10 Conference men’s golf championship Wednesday in a three-way playoff at Tucson, Ariz.

Gore made two pars to outlast Chris Stutts of Arizona State, who bogeyed the first playoff hole, and Birk Nelson of Oregon State, who bogeyed the second one.

Stutts shot a three-under-par 69 to make up three strokes on Nelson and Gore, the third-round leaders, and forge a three-way tie at 287 on the Tucson National course.

Track and Field

Andre DeSaussure of Taft High, defending City Section champion in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, will compete in only the 400 for the rest of the season because of a series of leg injuries.

DeSaussure, runner-up in the 400 in last year’s state meet, is scheduled to run the 400 today in the Northwest Valley Conference preliminaries at Birmingham High.

Dolores Tuimoloau of Channel Islands High has been selected Cal-Hi Sports high school athlete of the week.

In the Ventura County championships, she broke her county record in the shotput and improved her state season-best mark to 49 feet 2 inches--seventh-best on the all-time state list.

Miscellany

Royal High has named Mike Kohl girls’ basketball coach and Stan Quina as football assistant.

It will be the first varsity head-coaching job for Kohl. Quina coached Simi Valley for four years before resigning in 1992.

The Valley United Wild Things, a girls’ 16-and-under soccer team, has advanced to Saturday’s semifinals of the California Youth Soccer Assn. Southern Region national cup tournament at Indio.

The team includes Tami Pivnick and Vanessa Thiele (Chaminade), Kim Pickup (Chatsworth), Jessica Post and Natalie Kim (Harvard-Westlake), Kim Daws (Louisville) and Brenna Vincent (Notre Dame).
