Seven Orange County high school baseball players have been selected for the National Amateur All-Star Baseball Tournament, June 21-25 in Evansville, Ind.
The county players: Derek Baker, Tustin; Cory Barnett, Los Alamitos; Seth Etherton, Dana Hills; Erik Mattern, Mater Dei; Craig Wilson, Marina; Jaret Wright, Katella, and Peter Zamora, Capistrano Valley.
Also participating from the area are Huntington Beach’s Justin Brunette (San Diego State) and Santa Ana’s John Pelayo (Rancho Santiago).
The tournament pits 20-player all-star teams of 16- to 18-year-olds around the country in a round-robin series, with the title game televised live on ESPN. Former Dodger Steve Garvey is honorary commissioner for this year’s tournament.
The National Federation Wrestling Rules Committee has adjusted weight classes in high school wrestling--its first change since 1988--in an attempt to provide more opportunities in the lower and upper weight categories.
The bottom weight class has been changed from 103 to 100 pounds, followed by a 106-pound class. The other change is an addition of a 215-pound class, bridging the gap between the 185 and 275 classes.
The changes, a result of the committee’s review of a national survey, are mandatory beginning with the 1995-96 season and optional by state association adoption next season.
