Share

Today’s schedule: Field events begin at 3 p.m. and running events at 4:30 at Van Nuys Birmingham High.

* Last year’s champions: Boys’ team--Dorsey; girls’ team--University.

* Outlook: The Dorsey boys are expected to breeze to their second consecutive title with 12 qualifiers in the finals. Birmingham, last year’s runner-up, is next with 11. Dorsey sprinter Leo Settle is favored in the 100 and 200 meters and also runs on the 400 and 1,600 relays. “We feel we’re going to take City by a good 20 points. We have too much depth,” Settle said. Andre DeSaussure of Woodland Hills Taft won the 100, 200 and 400 at last year’s meet, but he will compete only in the 400 today after cutting back his schedule. In the girls’ competition, University is not expected to repeat. Gardena, Washington, Woodland Hills El Camino Real, Westchester, Hamilton and Dorsey are among the favorites. Betty Butler of Dorsey could be a double-event winner after posting the fastest qualifying times in the 400 and 800.
