Cantu Bows Out; Browne to Coach Baseball at Alemany

Share

Frank Cantu, who was hired earlier this month to succeed Jim Ozella as Alemany High baseball coach, has withdrawn from the position and been replaced by assistant coach Tim Browne.

Alemany Athletic Director Dudley Rooney said Cantu realized that coaching would conflict with his duties as principal at St. Didacus, an elementary school in Sylmar.

Browne, a 10-year assistant under Ozella and a math teacher at Alemany, will take over the program next season.

“It should be an easy transition,” Rooney said. “All the kids know him and he obviously knows the program because he’s been around a long time.”

Gillespie led the team with 80 hits and a .342 average.

Jacob Cruz of Arizona State was named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Cruz, a junior from Channel Islands High, batted .412 with 12 home runs and 61 runs batted in.
