Competitors at Masters Track Meet Take Aim at State

Share

Orange County distance standouts Carrie Garritson of Buena Park and Jaime Martinez of Orange will attempt to move another step closer to State titles tonight at the Masters Meet at Cerritos College.

Field events begin with the boys’ discus at 5:30 p.m. Running events start at 7. The top five in each event qualify for next weekend’s State meet at the same site.

Garritson, who will attend Alabama in the fall, won the 3,200-meter race at the Arcadia Invitational in April in one of fastest times in the nation this season (10 minutes 39.33 seconds). She recently won the Freeway League and Southern Section Division II titles in the same event.

Martinez, the section’s Division II champion in the 3,200, also qualified to compete in the 1,600 at the Masters. But Orange Coach Lanny Carter said Martinez would skip the 1,600 today so he can concentrate on the 3,200. Capistrano Valley’s Adalberto Sanchez and Katella’s Mike Moreno will join Martinez in the field.

Among the other county athletes competing today are Woodbridge’s Gary Young (100 and 200 meters), Esperanza’s Courtney Pugmire (800 and 1,600) and Kristy Kierulff (high jump), Newport Harbor’s Wade Tift (shot put) and Gina Heads (shot put and discus) and Foothill’s Tara Oettinger (400 and long jump).
