Better late than never.

El Camino Real High left-hander Randy Wolf expected to be selected Thursday, the first day of the major league amateur draft. He finally got the call Friday, when the Dodgers made him a 25th-round selection.

“I am a little disappointed,” Wolf said, “but there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Wolf, one of 20 area players selected in the first two days, slipped to the 25th round because of the impression that he needed a large signing bonus to walk away from a scholarship to Pepperdine.

But, regardless of whether he signs with the Dodgers, Wolf will pitch in Dodger Stadium soon.

He picked up a save Friday to put his team back into the City Section 4-A Division championship game at Dodger Stadium. Wolf earned a save in the Conquistadores’ championship victory last season in Dodger Stadium.

Most of the other area players selected in the draft, which went through the 46th round Friday and concludes today, were from the college ranks.

USC first baseman J.P. Roberge, of St. Francis High, was taken by the Dodgers in the 18th round. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo designated hitter Rob Neal, a Westlake High graduate, was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the 23th round.

Pepperdine shortstop Erik Martinez, who played at North Hollywood High and Pierce College, was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 24th round.

Glendale College had its second player selected Friday when the Seattle Mariners drafted shortstop Randy Vickers in the 31st round. Vaquero outfielder Bryan Warner was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 14th round Thursday.

Pierce left-hander Adam West was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 30th round. Left-handed pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez, who defected from Cuba and pitched one game at Mission College this season, was selected by the Mariners in the 22nd round.

Two Crescenta Valley players led the crop of high school players selected Friday. Infielder Kirk Hagge went to the Detroit Tigers in the 18th round and right-handed pitcher Garrett Lee was taken by the Angels in the 20th round.

Moorpark outfielder Jason Adamson was a 33rd-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Simi Valley third baseman Ryan Hankins went to the Philadelphia Phillies in the same round.

Roberge, a junior, hit .332 with 11 home runs, 48 RBIs and 18 stolen bases for the Trojans this season.

Neal’s stock dropped because scouts had questions about his surgically repaired right shoulder. Neal, who hit .306 with 40 RBIs, said he expects to play this summer in Alaska, then sign if the Twins feel his shoulder is sound.

Martinez was drafted as a shortstop, even though this was the first year since high school that he’d played that position.

Vickers and Warner were both All-Western State Conference selections this season at Glendale, each hitting above .350. Vickers hit 13 home runs and Warner had 11.

West, a Thousand Oaks High graduate who has signed to pitch at Pacific, was 10-4 with a 2.95 ERA, earning Western State Conference Southern Division pitcher of the year honors.

Hagge said he isn’t sure if he will sign with the Tigers. A 6-foot-4 infielder, Hagge said he has a scholarship offer from Cal State Fullerton, but he has not signed yet with the Titans.

Lee (6-4, 190 pounds) was 4-3 with a 1.33 ERA during the regular season for Crescenta Valley.

Derryman attracted scouts with his powerful arm and prospect he might add to the 175 pounds on his 6-foot-4 frame. Derryman said he plans to play junior college baseball before signing.

Adamson hit .455 with three home runs, 20 RBIs and 12 stolen bases for the Musketeers during the regular season.

Hankins, the Marmonte League co-player of the year, hit nine home runs and drove in 27 runs for the Pioneers. He has signed to play college baseball at UNLV.
