Crash Kills Woman, Chip Banks Charged

Former NFL and USC linebacker Chip Banks was arrested after his car collided with another in north Atlanta, killing a 50-year-old woman, police said.

Banks, 35, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, giving false information to officers, driving without a license and crossing the median, police said.

Mattie Lee Chaney of Atlanta was dead at the scene Monday after Banks’ car hit hers head on, police said.

Banks was treated at a hospital for facial injuries and was released.

Notre Dame football players Michael Miller and Tracy Graham have been ordered by the university to perform community service but are expected back on the team after conclusion of a theft investigation, according to the South Bend Tribune. Earlier, St. Joseph County Prosecutor Michael Barnes had said there was not enough evidence to charge either player after a stolen TV set and videocassette recorder were found in an off-campus apartment where they were living.

The Indiana attorney general’s office and lawyers for Mike Tyson are denying a Sports Illustrated story that says the former heavyweight champion is negotiating to be released early from prison, possibly by next week.

Tyson was sentenced to six years in the Indiana Youth Center after being convicted of rape. He is expected to be released in May of 1995 and is scheduled to appear Monday for a sentence reduction hearing.

The magazine reported in its June 13 issue that Tyson would pay Desiree Washington $1.5 million to settle a civil lawsuit and would apologize for doing something wrong and causing Washington harm, but would not admit to rape.

Boxing

Michael Carbajal, former International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council light-flyweight champion, will fight Josue Camacho of Puerto Rico for the World Boxing Organization’s 108-pound championship on July 12 in Phoenix.

Orlando Canizales retained his IBF bantamweight title for the 15th time, knocking out Rolando Bohol early in the fifth round at South Padre Island, Tex.

Basketball

The Phoenix Suns say they expect to know by the June 29 draft whether Charles Barkley will return next season. After making statements in training camp about retiring after the season, Barkley, 31, who played all season with a sore back, seemed less certain about leaving the game during the playoffs.

The Portland Trail Blazers have contacted University of Minnesota Coach Clem Haskins about their coaching vacancy.

The Chicago Bulls have withdrawn a tampering charge against the Orlando Magic over forward Horace Grant.

Coach Larry Brown of the Indiana Pacers had hip-replacement surgery and was listed in satisfactory condition. He is expected to remain at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis three or four days.

The two-time defending champion United States women’s basketball team beat Australia, 88-70, in the world championship tournament in Sydney.

Free-agent defensive end Richard Dent, who spent 11 years with the Chicago Bears, has reached an agreement in principle with the San Francisco 49ers. . . . Aaron Taylor, a first-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers, underwent knee surgery and faces six months of rehabilitation. . . . Verlon Biggs, one of the defensive stars of the 1969 Super Bowl champion New York Jets, died of leukemia in Moss Point, Miss.

Former champion Raymond Floyd, 51, withdrew from next week’s U.S. Open, saying he will concentrate on senior tour events. . . .
