HORSEFLESH: They shoot horses, don’t they? Don Anderson says they do. He’s the instructor of the soon-to-be disbanded horse-training program at Moorpark College. And he says he wants to prevent horseflesh dealers from buying any of the 40 horses that must be sold as surplus state property to the highest bidder (B1) . . . . “Between 75% and 80% of the horses at those sales go to the killers,” Anderson said. “You’re going to have to put me away and throw away the key before I let that happen.”

TOP-RATED HAMS: As defending champs, Conejo Valley Amateur Radio Club members will scramble to the top of Rasnow Peak on Saturday. They’ll string antennae on polls and mount satellite dishes on trailers. During a 24-hour marathon, the club’s battery-powered transmitters will try to reach out and touch more ham radio operators than any other competitor in America. Dick Anderson expects half of the club’s 100 members to join in the national contest: “We’ve won the last four years in a row.”

TEEN CHALLENGE: Now that summer is here, many teen-agers face their most difficult decision of the year: What to do before school resumes? Some teens loathe the idea of breaking training as world-class couch potatoes . . . . But billiards are big in some cities (Ventura County Life, Page 8). There’s skating, miniature golf, or even a summer job. It doesn’t have to be drudgery. Magic Mountain hires 3,000 summer workers. “We’re definitely in a big hiring mode,” a spokesman says. “We’ve got excellent, excellent opportunities for teens.”

TRADING PLACES: Sandi Webb is weary of all the attention given to sports heroes with feet of clay . . . . So the Simi Valley councilwoman wants the city to issue its own set of trading cards featuring its police officers. Their height, weight, arrest records and other stats could be listed on the back. She’d like to see police dog cards too. Said Webb: “It would boost morale and make officers role models more than some of these sports figures we’ve been hearing so much about.”
