A 20-year-old Ventura man was shot during an attempted robbery at his house early Friday, police said.

Jose Alvaro Ponce-Hernandez was listed in fair condition at Ventura County Medical Center.

He was sleeping at a house he shares with three men when they were awakened shortly after midnight by three armed robbers at the door, said Detective Jerry Thurston of the Ventura Police Department.

The robbers forced their way into the house in the 200 block of Vince Street after one of the men answered the door, Thurston said. The armed trio then grabbed the teen-aged son of one resident, Alfredo Ponce Villa Gomez, and threatened to shoot him unless Gomez gave them money, Thurston said.

Gomez, who was later arrested for possessing cocaine for sale, threw some cash at the robbers, Thurston said. During the confusion, Ponce-Hernandez made a movement that startled one of the robbers, who shot him in the neck.

The attackers fled and Ponce-Hernandez was taken to Ventura County Medical Center. Investigators are still looking for the robbers.
