Lothar Matthaeus, captain of the German team, was replaced at halftime because of the foot injury he suffered in his team’s final first-round match against South Korea.
Matthaeus, who plays sweeper, was spiked on his left foot. The injury required six stitches. He took an injection of a pain-killer before Saturday’s game but was in obvious pain during the first half.
Matthaeus said he expects to play all of his team’s quarterfinal game.
