A 75-year-old Lancaster man was killed Monday in the first fatal traffic accident in Ventura County over the Fourth of July weekend, police said.

The man, whose identity was not released pending notification of next of kin, made an illegal left turn in front of an oncoming car at Victoria Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard, Oxnard Police Officer John Ahearn said.

About 12:20 p.m., the victim was driving east on Channel Islands Boulevard, then made a left turn onto Victoria Avenue against the traffic light, Ahearn said.

He slammed into a car traveling west on Channel Islands Boulevard driven by Nerces Eykjian, 18, of Oxnard. Eykjian and his passenger, Robyn Hamilton, were listed in fair condition Monday night at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

In addition to investigating the fatal crash, authorities on Monday reported fewer drunk-driving arrests in Ventura County over the holiday weekend this year.

As of Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol had arrested 26 motorists on suspicion of drunk driving since the start of the Fourth of July weekend, compared to 33 during the same period last year.
