Angel Three Shots Off Pace in Nevada Golf Tournament

Darren Angel of Northridge fired an even-par 72 Tuesday in the first round of the Las Vegas Founders’ Legacy Junior Championship at the Legacy Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

Angel, who will be a senior at Granada Hills High in the fall, is in a five-way tie for third, three shots behind Charlie Woerner of Sunnyvale, Calif.

Ross Fulgentis of Westlake Village and Jason Semelsberger of Newhall are among a group of 10 players who shot 75 and are tied for 20th place. Art Weiner of Sherman Oaks shot 79.

The tournament, which concludes Thursday, is conducted by the American Junior Golf Assn., which last fall named Angel to its All-American team.

The El Cariso Senior Men’s Golf Club is hosting its annual Tom Drennon Charity Tournament on July 28 at El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar. The event will benefit the West Valley Special Education Center in Reseda.

Pro football

Former Glendale College quarterback Bob Gagliano signed a free-agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons, the club announced.

Gagliano, 35, has played eight seasons in the NFL and two in the USFL. Gagliano joined the Falcons last Oct. 7, but did not play in a game.

College baseball

Cal State Northridge teammates Eric Gillespie and Jason Shanahan are off to productive starts for the Mat-su Miners in Alaskan Central Baseball League play.

Through eight games, Gillespie, a freshman All-American catcher last spring, is batting .360. Shanahan, who will be a senior first baseman next season, is batting .290 with a home run and three runs batted in.

Mat-su, based in Palmer, is 5-3.
