Thanks to a strong finish and an assist from one of his teammates, Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys finished second in the national Korbel Cup points standings in a race last weekend in Fitchburg, Mass.

Rogers finished seventh overall in the Fitchburg Classic, a four-day stage race and the final Korbel points event of the season. Because of his placement, Rogers moved from third to second in the national standings behind Esteban Fraga of Ecuador.

Rogers had a flat tire during Saturday’s second stage and was in jeopardy of falling well behind the lead pack.

However, John Wordin of West Hills, Rogers’ teammate on the Valley-based Nutra-Fig Racing Team, removed a tire from his bicycle and gave it to Rogers. Wordin then waited for the support vehicle to replace his tire while Rogers finished the race.
