LOS ANGELES : City Population Rises but Stays Below 1990 Level

The population of Los Angeles has grown slightly over the past year but is still lower than in the 1990 Census, according to estimates released Friday by the city Planning Department.

The city’s estimated population, as of last October, is 3,467,785--up 5,382 from the year before but down 17,613 from 1990, officials said.

Los Angeles has a density of 7,500 people per square mile, which ranks eighth among the nation’s 10 largest cities. New York City has a density of 20,000 per square mile, and San Francisco has almost 15,000 per square mile.

Since 1990, the number of people living in single-family homes increased by more than 5,000.
