Generally, the World Cup has been embraced in Chicago, with exceptions.

Ed Moltzan of Schaumburg fired off a letter to the editor that appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times.

”. . . As far as I’m concerned, a person has to be a complete idiot to sit in front of the TV and watch 22 players running back and forth on the field tripping over each other for 1 1/2 to two hours. I haven’t seen such fancy footwork since I met my lovely wife at the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago over 40 years ago. . . .”

Chris Dufresne

Chris Dufresne was the Los Angeles Times’ national college football/basketball columnist from 1995 to 2015. He also covered skiing at the Winter Olympics and wrote extensively on most sports.
