UPLAND : Medfly Found Inside Sterile Release Zone
Agricultural officials Thursday reported the discovery of a Mediterranean fruit fly in an unincorporated area near Upland, just inside the Los Angeles area’s sterile release zone and agricultural quarantine area.
Cooperative Medfly Project staffers are releasing 580 million sterile Medflies each week in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties as part of a two-year intensified program to eradicate the crop-destroying pest from the Los Angeles basin. Ground applications of malathion will begin quickly, a project spokesman said.
