Share

A Woodland Hills man suspected of killing a bystander in a shooting last month turned himself in Thursday, two days after police released his name and photograph and a $25,000 reward was posted.

Chaveliaee Hammond, 20, walked into the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys station at 3:30 a.m. accompanied by his mother, said Detective Dan O’Hanian.

Hammond, whose street name is “Lil Man,” is scheduled to be arraigned today for murder and an unrelated robbery charge. He is being held without bail.

Police had been looking for Hammond since the June 11 fatal shooting of Renee Hurtado, 21, outside a Panorama City convenience store at Van Nuys Boulevard and Plummer Street.

Hurtado had returned to her car where her daughter, sister-in-law and niece were waiting. Gunfire erupted and a stray bullet struck Hurtado in the chest. She died at a hospital. Police believe that Hammond was shooting at a group of men who were behind Hurtado’s car in a dispute over who could sell drugs on that corner.
