A 33-year-old man drove his car into a pizza restaurant Thursday, injuring himself and one of the owners.

Police said the driver hit a curb, a street sign and lost control of the car before ramming into the restaurant.

Joseph Robert Chavez of Santa Ana, who was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving, was airlifted to UCI Medical Center in Orange after being found unconscious, Police Sgt. Bob Chaney said. Chaney said it was not immediately known what evidence officers had to arrest the suspect.

Chavez, who is in serious condition, was driving south on Indiana Avenue just before 2:30 p.m. when his car swerved across the street, hit the curb and then the street sign. Chaney said the man then lost control of his car, which crashed into the front of Frank’s Italian Food, 8242 Commonwealth Ave.

Chavez’s car wound up four feet inside the building. One of the owners was hit by flying debris, police said.

Hye Cha Kuark, 36, had minor cuts on her knee and ankle and was taken to Martin Luther Hospital in Anaheim for treatment and released, Chaney said.
