BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Bonds Joins Father in 250/300 Club

Barry Bonds stole the 300th base of his career in the first inning and promptly picked up the second-base bag. He handed it to his father, Bobby Bonds, who gave it to a batboy to take into the clubhouse. But the Giants couldn’t get another base right away, so it was put back until after the inning, when it was exchanged.

Bonds became the sixth player in major league history to hit 250 home runs and steal 300 bases. The others are Willie Mays (660 home runs, 338 stolen bases); Bobby Bonds (332 home runs, 461 stolen bases); Joe Morgan (268 home runs, 689 stolen base); Andre Dawson (427 home runs, 314 stolen bases) and Vada Pinson (256 home runs, 305 stolen bases).

Tom Candiotti can’t remember if he has pitched in every city on a trip before, but when he starts today against the San Francisco Giants, it will be his fourth city of this 13-game trip.

“The team has needed me to give them some innings, and I’m glad to be able to take the ball,” said Candiotti, who started in Philadelphia and Montreal and pitched seven innings of relief in New York. “Even as a knuckleballer, you still get sore and you still have to lift weights and get ready to pitch, but I enjoy it. I told Perry (pitching coach Ron Perranoski) all along to start me. One time two years ago when we had all those doubleheaders, I wanted to start both games. I would fit in well with a rotation of four guys.”

Candiotti, who will start on three days’ rest, pitched on two days’ rest when he was called in to relieve Ismael Valdes in the second inning, then came back four days later and started another game. He has a 1-1 record and has given up four earned runs in 20 innings for a 1.80 earned-run average on the trip.
