Manager Marcel Lachemann said Mark Leiter probably will get a chance to fill the closer role while the team attempts to make a trade for one.

“I think his personality suits the role well,” Lachemann said. “He’s the type of pitcher who responds to the urgency of the situation.”

Leiter, who has made seven starts this season, has a 1.59 ERA in his last six relief appearances.

The Seattle Mariners said they expect a final decision today on their bid to play their Aug. 2-10 home stand against the Angels, Kansas City and Texas at Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium because the Kingdome is closed while loose ceiling tiles are removed. Major League Players Assn. approval is all that is needed.

The Angels have said they are against the move and filed a protest with the American League to no avail.
