PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Colts’ Alberts Out for Season

Trev Alberts, the fifth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, was declared out for the season by the Indianapolis Colts because surgery is needed to repair his dislocated elbow.

Indianapolis, which took running back Marshall Faulk with the second overall pick, had expected Alberts, an outside linebacker from Nebraska, to be an immediate starter.

Alberts suffered a partially dislocated elbow in the exhibition opener against Seattle.

Deion Sanders will meet with Coach Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins and hold a news conference Saturday before attending the team’s exhibition against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I’ve met him before, but I’d like the opportunity to sit down and talk with him a little bit,” Shula said. “We’ll find out about his interest and go from there.”

With Gary Anderson still holding out, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed David Treadwell, the former Denver and New York Giant kicker with the same range and reputation as Anderson: great on mid-length field goals, not as good on kickoffs.

Apparently dissatisfied with Charlie Baumann’s inconsistency on kickoffs, the Steelers wanted another veteran should Anderson’s holdout continue.

Bill Musgrave completed a touchdown pass to Darrick Owens with 1:40 left to rally the San Francisco 49ers to a 30-24 exhibition victory over the San Diego Chargers at San Diego. . . . Steve Hawkins, a safety in college who is being converted into a wide receiver, caught two touchdown passes in his NFL debut as the New England Patriots scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Washington Redskins, 27-17, in Foxboro, Mass.
