SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Coming into Friday night’s 20-lap street stock main event at Ventura Raceway, Bill Bartels of Los Angeles figured it was his turn to win a feature race during the Ventura County Fair, since his son, Ron Bartels of Hawthorne, did it last year.

Bartels figured right, taking the lead on the third lap and coasting to his third victory.

By the sixth lap, Bartels had a one-third of a lap lead over eventual second-place finisher James Weston of Santa Barbara, a margin he maintained until Jeff Holmes spun on the 10th lap to bring out the caution flag.

After the restart, Bartels needed four laps to open a quarter-lap lead over Weston, which he maintained until the final lap, when he ran into traffic and coasted to the finish.
