COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : ACROSS THE NATION : Disney Deflates the Pigskin Classic

The end has been expected for several weeks, and Disneyland made it official Tuesday, announcing it will not renew its sponsorship of the Pigskin Classic at Anaheim Stadium.

Disneyland’s five-year, $5-million sponsorship contract expired after Monday night’s game in which Ohio State beat Fresno State, 34-10. The attendance of 28,513 was the lowest in five years.

Florida remained No. 1 in the Associated Press poll, while Nebraska jumped to No. 2 after routing West Virginia in the Kickoff Classic.

The Cornhuskers, fourth in the preseason poll, climbed two spots after beating the Mountaineers, 31-0, on Sunday in the opening game of the season. Nebraska got the most first-place votes (23), but trailed Florida by seven points overall.

Students will be frisked on their way into Wisconsin football games at Camp Randall Stadium this season to help prevent another stampede like the one that injured dozens last year, an official said.

Virginia Tech said it has reached an agreement with Coach Frank Beamer to extend his contract by five years if the Hokies win at least six games this season. . . . Penn State linebackers Brian Gelzheiser and Jim Nelson and starting free safety Josh Kroell will not play Saturday night at Minnesota. Gelzheiser, who led the Lions in tackles last season, injured a knee two weeks ago and might also sit out a Sept. 10 game against USC. Nelson, a backup linebacker, has a broken fibula, while Kroell sustained a concussion last Tuesday. . . . Mississippi State’s football program is being investigated for three possible NCAA violations, school officials confirmed.
