BURGLAR ALARM: Seventeen burglaries have taken place...

BURGLAR ALARM: Seventeen burglaries have taken place at Ventura County fire stations while firefighters were away, in some cases, on false alarms (B1) . . . Stations in Simi Valley and Newbury Park were the latest to be hit . . . Worse yet, investigators suspect that the culprit may work for the Fire Department. Said Sgt. Harold Humphries of the Sheriff’s Department: “We believe that it’s either an ex- or a current employee.”

ALL ABOARD?: With attendance at the Ventura County Fair down 10% this year, it’s no surprise that ridership on Metrolink commuter trains to the fair also took a dive . . . Ridership dropped from 30,000 last year to about 21,000. Ticket sales will pay for most of the operating costs (B1) . . . the remaining $5,000 will be picked up by fair operators. Said one county transportation official: “The agreement is that we give our time, energy and support and the Fair Board pays the extra costs.”

FAMOUS HILLBILLY: Let me tell you a story ‘bout a man named Jed . . . Better yet, you can meet the man himself . . . Buddy Ebsen, who starred as Jed Clampett in the old television series “The Beverly Hillbillies,” will be at Phantom Books in Ventura from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday signing copies of his new autobiography, “The Other Side of Oz.” . . . In his book, Ebsen recounts how he lost the role of the Tin Man in “The Wizard of Oz.” Turns out, he nearly died after inhaling the aluminum dust in his makeup.

BEACH WALK: A group of hikers hoping to establish a California coastal trail will end their five-day promotional trek along Ventura County’s 35-mile-long coastline about noon today . . . Meanwhile, the Sierra Club Singles of Ventura County are planning their own beach walk this Sunday from Rincon State Park to Carpinteria . . . Tender feet need not be discouraged. This walk is a little shorter--seven miles round-trip. Said club official Carol Marsh: “This is more suitable for people who want an easy excursion on the weekend.” Information: 984-9806.
