Tu Advances in Junior U.S. Open Tennis

Fourth-seeded Meilen Tu of Northridge defeated Karin Palme of Mexico, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), Wednesday and advanced to today’s third round of the Junior U.S. Open--an international tournament in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.

Tu, a first-round loser last week in the professional U.S. Open, is one of eight American players still alive in the junior event.

However, Tu, 16, and Marissa Catlin of Clearwater, Fla. lost in the second round of doubles. They were defeated by eighth-seeded Magdalena Grzybowska and Aleksandra Olsza of Poland, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Tu and Catlin defeated Ania Bleszynski of Thousand Oaks and Amanda Basica of Rolling Hills Tuesday in the first round of doubles, 7-5, 6-2.

Soccer

Timo Scheunemann scored on a header to give The Master’s College men’s team a 1-0 nonconference victory over UC San Diego in Newhall.

Scheunemann, a sophomore from Germany, scored on a crossing pass from junior Stephen Janho at the 51st minute. Mustang goalkeeper Kris Bage made five saves.

The Master’s is 2-0, the Tritons 1-1.

Nicole Schiereck and Sarah Pihel scored in the second half to give Occidental a 2-0 victory over The Master’s in a nonconference women’s game at Eagle Rock.

Kariss Steinert made nine saves for the Mustangs (0-2).
