PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Fighting Mad Over Brawling

Seattle Seahawks Coach Tom Flores was furious over the Raiders’ behavior Sunday.

And Raider Coach Art Shell was equally angry after reviewing game films. Shell wasn’t about to defend the action of his players in a fight that resulted in the ejection of defensive linemen Chester McGlockton and Aundray Bruce with the Raiders trailing, 7-3, in the second quarter.

With their already thin defensive line decimated, the Raiders were outscored, 31-6, the rest of the way.

The incident began when Raider linebacker Winston Moss appeared to punch Seattle quarterback Rick Mirer while Mirer was on the ground. Seahawk lineman Ray Roberts rushed to Mirer’s defense, which led to the involvement of McGlockton and Bruce.

Did Moss give Mirer a cheap shot?

“It’s not a cheap shot unless you get caught,” said Moss, who was not penalized on the play.

Shell was upset with every Raider involved.

“You can’t be stupid,” he said. “Those things are uncalled for. You (might) want to go in and help your buddy, but the whistle has blown, the flags are up. You cease. You stop. You just don’t do that because, invariably, it hurts your football team.”

The Raiders led the league last season in penalties (148) and penalty yardage (1,181), falling one penalty short of the league record.

They are off to another infamous start this season with 19 penalties for 125 yards in two games. What can Shell do to stop the whistles?

“Talk about it,” he said. “Preach about it. Behind closed doors, you discuss it.”
