A 25-year-old woman died in a traffic accident early Tuesday when her husband veered in front of a pickup truck, which then hit the couple’s vehicle broadside, authorities said.

Maria Isabel Martinez Lopez, a mother of three young children, was on her way to work in the fields of Oxnard when the accident happened about 5:35 a.m. at Rice and Sturgis roads.

According to police, the woman’s husband, Martin Jesus Lopez, 29, made a left turn onto Sturgis Road in front of a pickup truck driven by 35-year-old Gilberto Lemos Ortiz of Oxnard.

Ortiz slammed on his brakes, but could not avoid the collision. His vehicle rammed into the passenger’s side of Lopez’s pickup truck, where Maria Lopez was sitting. She was pronounced dead at the scene. None of their children were in car at the time.

Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate said the Lopez family moved to Oxnard from Orange County last week and have relatives in Oxnard.

Martin Lopez was treated for minor injuries at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and released. A second passenger in Lopez’s truck, Noa Avalos Orozco, 32, was also taken to St. John’s and was listed in serious condition with a lacerated liver, police said.

Ortiz was not injured in the crash.
