Los Alamitos’ 56-0 victory over Long Beach Millikan Friday night was predictable, maybe even easier than it looked. And it looked like your basic 56-0 wipeout.

But amazingly enough, there was more at stake for the Griffins than merely extending their unbeaten streak to 40 games. Despite the wide winning margin, this turned out to be an important game for Los Alamitos.

Kevin Feterik, a junior quarterback, made his first start since breaking a bone in his left hand in the season opener. Although he appeared rusty at times, Feterik didn’t have much trouble shredding an overmatched Millikan secondary for 254 yards and four touchdowns.

He completed 13 of 21 passes before he was relieved by Sean Stein with 4 minutes 39 seconds left in the third quarter. The 5-0 Griffins, top-ranked in Orange County and fourth-ranked in the state, led by 42-0 at that point.

“He was rusty early,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said. “He needed to get ready for next week. I think he’ll be better off (after playing against Millikan).”

Stein directed two four-quarter touchdowns, including a 24-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Stan Guyness. Guyness and Brad Melsby each scored two touchdowns.

Melsby had a standout night, catching seven passes for 140 yards and intercepting two passes by Millikan quarterback Josh Weller.

When it was over, Barnes apologized to Millikan Coach Tony Peralta, who seemed unfazed by the final score. Barnes played his reserves almost exclusively midway through the third quarter.

What else the Griffins gained by beating Millikan (1-4) wasn’t immediately clear. Barnes certainly hopes Feterik is sharper next week against No. 10 Marina (5-0) in the Sunset League opener.

He also said he didn’t believe the Griffins, who haven’t lost since Oct. 25, 1991, are ready to win a league championship. That might be a little tough to fathom, however, particularly after such an overpowering performance.

“We make a lot of mistakes,” Barnes said after Los Alamitos did not throw an interception or lose a fumble. “But our skill guys cover us.”

Indeed. Whatever mistakes Barnes believed the Griffins committed, they were difficult to spot against Millikan.

Less than two minutes into the game, Melsby grabbed a Weller pass at the Millikan 42-yard line and raced down the sidelined untouched for the Griffins’ first score. Guyness turned a screen pass into a nine-yard scoring pass with 1:45 left in the first quarter and the rout was on.
