PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Interception Sets Up Canyon’s Victory

Share

Clay Kilbarger kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired to give Canyon High a 6-3 victory over Corona in a nonleague football game Friday at Corona High School.

The winning field goal was set up on the third interception of the game by Canyon defensive back Greg Jacobs, who returned an errant pass by Corona quarterback Mike Knox 58 yards to the Panther 31-yard line with five seconds remaining in the game.

“Knox likes to look at just one receiver on each play,” Jacobs said. “Once I saw him locked into the receiver, I went for the ball and got it.”

Jacobs intercepted his first pass with 8 minutes 9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Comanches were stopped after three plays and forced to punt. When Corona regained possession, a Knox pass was deflected by Troy Mills into Jacobs’ hands. Jacobs returned it 39 yards to midfield, but once again Canyon was stopped after three plays and forced to punt.

Corona kicker Andy Omlor kicked a 27-yard field goal with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter. Kilbarger countered with a 39-yard field goal with 54 seconds left in the quarter to tie the score.

Corona outgained Canyon in total offense, 209-170. The Panther defense held Canyon quarterback Adam Hoover to eight completions in 23 attempts for 74 yards.

The Comanches’ leading rusher was Cody Miller with 55 yards in 13 carries.
