PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Chambers’ Passing Sparks Western Win

Share

Dean Chambers passed for 126 yards and three touchdowns as Western controlled the clock and beat Katella, 33-0, in a nonleague game Friday at Glover Stadium.

Chambers completed 10 of 13 passes, but it was Western’s time-consuming running game that put the Pioneers up, 14-0, at halftime.

Starting from its 30-yard line to open the first quarter, Western drove 70 yards with eight consecutive running plays. Senior fullback Justin Starkey gained 20 yards on the first play from scrimmage and finished the drive with a six-yard touchdown run that proved to be all the scoring the Pioneers would need.

Starkey assumed a majority of Western’s offensive attack, rushing for 105 yards in 10 attempts and adding four catches for 42 yards. Western fullback Matt Frembling contributed to the running game, rushing 15 times for 69 yards.

After forcing Katella to punt on its first possession after Starkey’s touchdown, Western responded with another slow drive. The Pioneers went 52 yards on 12 plays to take a 14-0 lead when Chambers hit David Bell on a five-yard touchdown.

Western used only three passes in the first half, but reversed its offensive strategy by opening the third quarter with a nine-play, 67-yard drive.
