Notes on a Scorecard - Oct. 11, 1994

Share

Remember all those wild-scoring NFL games the first couple of weeks of the season? . . . The average point total for the 12 games played Sunday and Monday was a fraction less than 35. . . .

Obviously, it is time to install some new rules that favor the offense. . . .

Allow defensive players to make only eye contact with quarterbacks. Extend the end zones by 10 yards even if that means the second row of seats at some stadiums. Stop the clock after every completed pass. Give the Arizona Cardinals five downs instead of four. . . .

What is the most difficult single-game record to break in the NFL book? Fred Dryer’s two safeties, made by the Ram defensive end against the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 21, 1973, at the Coliseum. . . .

As for these Rams, the reason they get outscored in the second half almost every week might be that the opposition gets a wake-up call after taking them too lightly. . . .

Or, it could be that defenses come to the conclusion that if you stop Jerome Bettis, you’ve stopped the Rams. . . .

Harvey Williams showed some moves and speed on those rare occasions when the Raiders opened holes for him Sunday in Foxboro, Mass. . . .

But you wonder why the offensive line that protected Jeff Hostetler well against New England continues to have trouble on running plays. . . .

Even Emmitt Smith might not be effective behind these guys. . . .

NFL officials are more intrusive than ever. . . .

The Seattle Seahawks don’t enjoy the same home-field advantage at Husky Stadium that they had at the Kingdome. . . .

The Chiefs will try to break their two-game losing streak against California teams on Nov. 6 against the Raiders in Kansas City. . . .

Who needs Mike Ditka when the Chicago Bears’ Dave Wannstedt is doing one of the best coaching jobs in the league? . . .

Look-alikes: San Diego Charger quarterback Stan Humphries and golfer Mark O’Meara. . . .

Athlon magazine must be the only publication to pick UCLA to win the national basketball title in a year when defending champion Arkansas has all its starters back. . . .

The same magazine selects all-time teams for each school, regardless of position. . . .

The Bruin team consists of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Sidney Wicks, David Greenwood and Pooh Richardson. . . .

Nothing against Greenwood and Richardson, both outstanding players, but how could they possibly be chosen over Marques Johnson, Walt Hazzard and Gail Goodrich? . . .

I can’t find fault with the USC team: Bill Sharman, Harold Miner, Gus Williams, Paul Westphal and John Rudometkin. . . .

All-North Carolina: Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Phil Ford, Lennie Rosenbluth. . . .

All-Duke: Christian Laettner, Mike Giminski, Bobby Hurley, Grant Hill, Art Heyman. . . .

All-Indiana: Scott May, Kurt Benson, Steve Alford, Calbert Cheaney, Don Schlundt. No Isiah Thomas, who deserves to be named despite having played only two years. . . .

All-Kansas: Wilt Chamberlain, Clyde Lovellette, Danny Manning, Jo Jo White, Darnell Valentine. . . .

The first John R. Wooden Classic--matching UCLA- Kentucky and Kansas- Massachusetts on Dec. 3 at The Pond of Anaheim--will be telecast live to 32 countries by the NBC Super Channel. . . . Some nerve of Anfernee Hardaway, demanding that he become the highest-paid player on the Orlando Magic. . . .

A slightly more valuable teammate, Shaquille O’Neal, is the one who suggested the Magic trade for Hardaway’s draft rights after the two became friends during the filming of “Blue Chips.” . . .

It was no surprise the Indiana Pacers signed John Williams. Coach Larry Brown always has liked the big fella. . . .

There will be a UCLA-USC doubleheader Wednesday in Westwood, the women’s soccer teams playing at 1 p.m. at the North Soccer Field and the women’s volleyball teams at 4 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion. . . .

The Best Seven bet is a misnomer. None of the races on Breeders’ Cup preview day at Belmont on Saturday were included in the wager that has been a flop nationwide. . . .

Wayne Lukas is known to be bullish on his horses, but I’d never heard him mention another of his fillies in the same breath with Landaluce until unbeaten 2-year-old Flanders won the Frizette Stakes by 21 1/2 lengths. . . .

Lukas, who is on a tear again, probably will have nine starters on Breeders’ Cup Day Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs. . . .

New Dodger organization catching instructor Mike Scioscia will earn his pay if he only teaches how to block the plate.
