Joe Montana skipped the Kansas City Chiefs’ extended workout to have his injured hip examined, and starting nose tackle Dan Saleaumua and starting tight end Keith Cash also sat out in the sore-muscled aftermath of a 20-6 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

“The shoulder is sore,” Coach Marty Schottenheimer said of Montana. “The hip is black and blue.”

Schottenheimer added that he expects Montana to be ready for Kansas City’s game at Denver next Monday night.

Also Monday, the Chiefs signed wide receiver Eric Martin to a two-year contract. Martin, who played the New Orleans Saints for nine seasons, is the team’s career leader in receptions with 532, receiving yards with 7,854 and receiving touchdowns with 48. He replaces Michael Young, who was placed on injured reserve Monday.

New York Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason is expected to start against the New England Patriots, but his sore ankle still isn’t strong enough to withstand an entire week of practice. He will work sparingly this week. . . . Arizona Cardinal Coach Buddy Ryan said he lined up a half-dozen unemployed kickers to audition today for the team, which will be without Greg Davis, sidelined because of a pulled left hamstring. Among them is Roger Ruzek, who held the job when Ryan was coaching the Philadelphia Eagles. “We’ve got everybody who ever took a deep breath and tried to kick it through,” Ryan joked. . . . Cleveland Brown tight end Walter Reeves had back surgery and will be sidelined for the season. Reeves is the second starter within a week to undergo surgery. One week ago, fullback Tommy Vardell was put on injured reserve after a torn tendon and a torn ligament were repaired.
