SIDELINES : Crespi Deejay Emerson a Real Crowd-Pleaser at Receptions

Share

When Wayne Emerson isn’t catching spirals, he’s spinning discs.

For the past four years, the Crespi High wide receiver has been earning as much as $250 a day as a disc jockey for parties, weddings and dances.

“I started my own business in eighth grade,” said Emerson, who is second in the region with 32 receptions. “I even have my own business card.”

Emerson hauls his equipment in a family van. His collection of compact discs totals nearly 3,000. And if he doesn’t have the desired music, he’ll find it.

“If they want rap, I’ll play rap,” Emerson said. “The only thing I won’t play is something with dirty language.”

Alex or Trevino?: At Verdugo Hills High, you can’t tell the football players without a program. Or with a program.

Of the 43 names on the Dons’ roster, 12 are misspelled.

Kicker Alex Trevino was omitted altogether. When a reporter on the sideline asked who the kicker was, a Verdugo Hills coach jotted Trevino’s name at the bottom of the roster.

A later check revealed that, you guessed it, he misspelled it.

Sounds threatening: Grant High football Coach Bill Foster won’t soon forget Van Nuys’ final touchdown in a 52-25 victory over his team.

With 1 minute 59 seconds left, John McPherson scored from 57 yards on a fake punt.

“If we’re in that situation, leading 45-25, we punt the football,” Foster said. “We weren’t too happy about that. But what goes around comes around.”

Bookends: Cornerback Jim Rose tied a school single-game record with three interceptions in Cal State Northridge’s 40-14 victory over Sonoma State last weekend. He has no illusions why.

Playing corner on the opposite side is senior Vinnie Johnson, a four-year starter.

“Teams should pick on me,” said Rose, who was named the team’s defensive player of the week. “Vinnie’s a proven starter. If I was them, I’d probably throw it my way too.”

Royal High football Coach Gene Uebelhardt, whose team posted its second consecutive shutout, 35-0 over Newbury Park, gave the credit to defensive coordinator Don Reyes.

“I don’t know anything about defense,” Uebelhardt said. “All I do is make sure they are on the bus.”

Auto Club: Ventura High football Coach Phil McCune, whose team has a record of 1-4 but, at 1-1, is very much in the Channel League race: “We’re not in the driver’s seat, but we’re in the car.”

Horror flick: Chaminade High defensive tackle Edward Youssoufan on the Eagles’ 72-14 loss to Bloomington: “When we had films the next day, we didn’t have films. Coach (Rich Lawson) said, ‘You guys don’t need to see this.’ ”

Stats

Quarterback Ruben Montoya’s nine-yard run against Van Nuys High last Friday marked the first touchdown this season by a Grant player other than tailback Di-Onte Smith. Of Smith’s 11 touchdown runs, six have been of 46 yards or more, and five have been 64 yards or longer.

Clemons rushed 26 times for 136 yards to lead Moorpark to a 23-20 upset of previously undefeated Bakersfield. Lopez made 14 unassisted tackles and caused a fumble as Glendale downed Santa Monica, 18-0.

Tackling machine: Cal Lutheran linebacker Lance Martin, a Thousand Oaks High graduate, was selected the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s top defensive player of the week for his 20-tackle effort in a 23-6 loss to La Verne.

Martin is the first player in the conference to record 20 tackles in a game.
