Foothill Stuns No. 9 Villa Park With 19 Points in Final Minutes

Foothill scored 19 points in the final five minutes to upset previously unbeaten and ninth-ranked Villa Park, 33-14, in a Century League opener Thursday at Tustin High.

Nick Sveslosky scored two of his three touchdowns in the final quarter and his interception led to another score.

It was a matchup of two teams expected to contend for the league title. Sveslosky and Foothill’s defense rose to another level late in the game, and the Spartans fizzled after playing to a 14-14 tie early in the fourth quarter.

Sveslosky, who rushed for 84 yards in 17 carries, scored on a four-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Lang with 4 minutes 57 seconds remaining, then scored on a 17-yard run with 3:19 left after a Villa Park fumble, giving Foothill (2-4) a 27-14 lead.

His interception led to Foothill’s final score--a 10-yard run by Trammel Robinson.

Villa Park (4-1-1) led, 14-7, before the Knights rallied to tie late in the third quarter. A 44-yard touchdown pass from Lang to Mike Boyes bounced off Villa Park’s Larry Hendrick and into Boyes’ hands as he ran untouched into the end zone with 1:23 remaining in the quarter.

Foothill’s defense, led by Ruben Vaughan, Mark Mason and Tony Tuioti, also played well, limiting Villa Park to 95 yards rushing.

Villa Park got a strong effort from sophomore tailback Franklin Haynes, who rushed for 75 yards in 18 carries and caught three passes for 82 yards. He scored on a five-yard run in the first half.
