Valencia High’s football team forfeited two victories and a tie after school officials discovered a fifth-year senior on the Tiger roster.

The player, transferred to Valencia 2 1/2 years ago, when school officials believed him to be a sophomore. He was held out of the Tigers’ 18-6 victory last week against Sunny Hills.

Bill McCracken, boys’ athletic director, informed the Southern Section and the schools involved of the rule infraction.

Villa Park, which played Valencia to a 0-0 tie to open the season, improves from 4-1-1 to 5-1. Servite had its 17-13 defeat erased and stood at 3-2 entering Friday’s game against Tustin. El Dorado’s 28-24 defeat is now changed to a victory, and the Hawks were 2-3 before their game Friday against Cypress.

Valencia, which tied Anaheim, 15-15, Friday, is 1-4-1 overall, 0-0-1 in the Orange League.

ABOUT FACE

In the first half of Esperanza’s 26-16 victory over Edison Friday, Aztec wide receiver Brian Forth took a handoff from running back Dahrin Footman on a reverse play, but Forth pulled up and passed the ball to Ryan Wilkins for a 55-yard touchdown.

The play made Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes grin.

Barnes and his Griffin football staff, who watched the game from the Esperanza side of the stadium at Orange Coast College, pulled the same trickery on Marina one night earlier when wide receiver Stan Guyness took a handoff on a reverse then passed to Tony Hartley for a 39-yard touchdown.

It must be an old Empire League play.

LOOKING AHEAD

Getting down to the nitty-gritty in the second week of league play, the Orange League offers a couple of classic matchups featuring strong defenses against formidable offenses.

An impressive Brea-Olinda team will get a look at Reuben Droughns and Anaheim at Glover Stadium. If that isn’t enough, the explosive Savanna offense should get a test against a stingy Valencia defense. The game is at Valencia.

But the night’s best matchup is at Orange Coast College, where top-ranked Los Alamitos should get a decent workout from third-ranked Edison. At stake in the Sunset League contest will be the Griffins’ 41-game unbeaten streak.

Two cross-town rivalries continue Friday night in key Sea View League games. Woodbridge and Irvine play at Irvine, and Corona del Mar plays at Newport Harbor.

FIT TO BE TIED

“They outmanned us tonight and that’s why we lost,” Carter said Friday after the Colonists’ game against Valencia.

Uh, Coach, it was a 15-15 tie.

“Oh. That must have been my Freudian showing through.”

NEXT IN LINE

Before Adam Roman’s 40-yard punt return for a touchdown Friday against Aliso Niguel, Laguna Hills had gone the equivalent of two full seasons without one. It was Roman, then a Hawk sophomore, who last performed the feat.

With teammate Brendan McGraw having a spectacular year running the ball, opportunities for the 5-foot-7 Roman to get his hands on the ball have been few and far between.

“Brendan is our whole offense but I don’t mind taking a back seat as long as I can keep doing this,” said Roman, who totaled 70 yards on the three returns.

SOMETHING MISSING

There was a little bit of everything missing from the kicking game in Friday’s 15-15 tie between Brea-Olinda and Western. A narrowly missed 62-yard field goal by Western; two missed extra-point attempts by Brea; a missed on-sides recovery by Brea, and finally, a missing tee on a field goal attempt that resulted in a timeout taken by the Wildcats.
