Former Hart High second baseman Jamie Herrington, who ranks second in Southern Section softball history for hits in a career, has transferred to Cal State Northridge.

Herrington, 20, batted just under .400 at College of the Canyons last season, after transferring from Hawaii. The Matadors, runners-up in the NCAA Division I Women’s College World Series last season, have given Herrington a partial scholarship and have moved her to the outfield.

Herrington’s name was Jamie Dean until she recently married Rick Herrington, defensive coordinator of the Hart High football team.

“It’s a compliment that they wanted me, or just to be asked,” she said of landing at Northridge. “I’m a rookie. I don’t want to be a team leader. I’m laying low. You have to let people see how you play.”

Herrington had 190 hits at Hart, second only to Julie Smith of Charter Oak (206) in Southern Section history.

She led the Indians to the section 4-A championship game, where they lost to Santa Ana Foothill, 5-2, in her senior year. She accepted a scholarship to Hawaii in 1992 but withdrew after one semester, never playing a game for the Rainbow Warriors.

Herrington, a left-handed slap hitter who usually bats leadoff, said she played at Canyons last year in hopes of getting another scholarship. After she was named first-team All-Western State Conference while playing third base for the Cougars, Northridge came calling.

“Northridge has lost some good players, but this team has a lot of heart,” Herrington said. “I think we can do good things.”
